Wife bought policy after man’s death, claimed Rs 15 lakh

AHMEDABAD: Ellisbridge police station on Tuesday registered an FIR against a woman, for allegedly making a Rs 15 lakh

claim

from an insurance company, by using forged documents of her husband’s death two years after he died due to alcohol abuse.


According to the FIR registered by a manager of the insurance company, Varsha Dedawala, a resident of Naroda, submitted forged proof of the death of her husband, Karan Dedawala. These included a death certificate, dated June 25, 2016, and a death declaration certificate issued by a doctor from the Sabarmati area.

Dedawala had taken out an insurance policy on January 11, 2016, with an annual premium of Rs 20,970. The policy was taken out after Karan Dedawala’s death on July 20, 2014.

“Dedawala tried to make the claim two years after her husband died for an insurance policy she took out after Karan Dedawala’s death. She made the claim on February 22, 2017. When we scrutinized it, we found the claim made was fake,” said the complainant in the FIR.

Husband was an alcoholic, allegedly sold liquor

A prima facie inquiry by police revealed that Karan Dedawala was an alcoholic and was also allegedly involved in selling liquor. Due to his excessive drinking, he developed liver

cirrhosis

and was admitted to a private hospital for a week in July 2013 and for two days in July 2014. He died during his second stint in hospital.

Death certificate from AMC

The forged documents submitted in the claim include a death certificate from the

Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation

(AMC) for June 25, 2016. The certificate, with registration number ‘2016-DW-0216-0000288’ was issued on June 30, 2016. The needle of suspicion also points to AMC officials for issuing the false certificate, said a source in the police.
