AHMEDABAD: Pankaj Patel, the chairman of board of governors at IIM Ahmedabad (IIM-A) convened a meeting of alumni and other stakeholders at IIM-A on Sunday morning where the officials initiated a dialogue on the conservation and re-construction of dorms and other buildings on the old campus built by American architect Louis Kahn.

While the institute remained tightlipped over the discussion and outcome, some alumni present at the meeting said that a major section was presentation on findings of the three professors from IIT Roorkee who had employed different methods to assess usability and strength of the buildings.

"It has been an ongoing pitch by the IIM-A management that the buildings need to be razed as they are unsustainable now. The report by IIT Roorkee team put the pitch in perspective by mentioning that the buildings lack required strength and can be dangerous for occupants. In case of natural calamity like earthquake, the buildings may not withstand the impact," said an alumnus present at the event.

Some alumni tried to raise the issue of architectural legacy and ways to conserve the structures, but the majority extended their support to the decision in favour of safety and longevity.
