Bullet train viaduct span in Kalupur completed
Ahmedabad: The Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project completed the launching of a viaduct span over the Kalupur flyover in Ahmedabad, a key railway overbridge on the Western Railway’s Sabarmati-Mumbai main line.
Officials from the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited said the viaduct, aligned parallel to the existing railway track, was launched using the span-by-span method, with a 45m bridge span erected over the flyover. The structure rises about 19.5m from ground to rail level and was assembled from 19 segments, with the completed span weighing around 1,200 metric tonnes.
The Kalupur flyover is among Ahmedabad’s busiest two-lane links, connecting Shahibaug, Asarwa and Kalupur and carrying thousands of commuters daily. Completion of the span is expected to prevent prolonged traffic diversion on this corridor by limiting disruption to short, pre-planned night closures rather than extended daytime restrictions, officials said.
Span erection was executed under a controlled night block from midnight to 6am, with entry and exit points within the work zone fully closed during those hours and normal traffic restored during the day. Permissions were secured for May 22-25, and auto-launching, segment transport, erection, dry matching and glueing were finished in three nights, the officials added.
In Ahmedabad district, the corridor crosses 31 locations out which 23 have been completed.
