Agra: Director general of police and special protection group (SPG) director Alok Sharma on Saturday called on engineering students of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) to focus on applied knowledge and innovation to address real-world challenges, stressing the importance of practical and industry-oriented learning in engineering education.Speaking at the inauguration of Project Expo 2025-26, organised by the Zakir Husain College of Engineering and Technology (ZHCET), Sharma described engineering as an applied science that must contribute to technological advancement and nation-building. He urged students to combine theoretical concepts with practical implementation and professional skills.Guest of honour Sunil Dutta, general secretary of the Tala Nagri Industrial Development Association (TNIDA), highlighted the need for stronger collaboration between educational institutions and industries. He suggested introducing short-term professional courses and skill-based programmes to transform institutions into “earning centres” alongside learning centres. He also expressed hope that Aligarh would evolve from ‘tala nagri’ (city of locks) into ‘tech nagri’ through innovation and technological growth.AMU acting vice-chancellor Mohd Mohsin Khan visited the exhibition stalls and interacted with students.
He lauded the organisers and participants for promoting innovation, interdisciplinary learning and research culture within the university.Dean of faculty of engineering and technology Mohd Hasan and ZHCET principal, Mohd Muzammil, said, “The expo provided an important platform for students to demonstrate technical skills and innovative ideas.”The exhibition featured projects on artificial intelligence, robotics, renewable energy, automation, sustainable development and smart technologies from departments including mechanical, civil, electrical, electronics, chemical and computer engineering, architecture, and petroleum studies.A felicitation ceremony was also held to honour students for achievements in placements, academics and research. ZHCET student Irshad Ahmad was felicitated for securing a placement at Black Box AI with an annual package of Rs 3.3 crore.
