activist, Pandit Keshav Dev, was booked by
Aligarh
police on Friday for making objectionable statements and allegedly attempting to “disrupt communal harmony” after he demanded a survey of the city's
Jama Masjid
, claiming that it was "built on government land and there are no documents available related to the mosque".
An FIR has been registered against him under various
IPC
sections, including 153-A (promoting disharmony, enmity or feelings of hatred between different groups) and 295-A (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings), and under section 66 of the IT Act at Bannadevi police station. SP (city) Kuldeep Singh Gunawat said that another FIR was registered against him on Saturday for "interfering in government work and misbehaviour".
The SP added that a police team had gone to issue him a notice under CrPC section 41-A to appear before a cop, as his arrest was not required but there was a "reasonable complaint against him".
In a letter to CM Yogi on Thursday, Dev had written that as per information provided by Aligarh Municipal Corporation, Jama Masjid was built on government land and there are no documents available about the mosque.
"The ownership does not belong to any individual," he further claimed.
Meanwhile, appealing to the Muslim community to maintain calm, Aligarh mayor Mohammad Furkan said, “There is no need to get worried. No one can snatch the mosque. If such a situation arises, I will give my life but will not let this happen.”
