AGRA: A 50-year-old man from Uttar Pradesh's Shamli was sentenced to life imprisonment by a local court in Muzaffarnagar for killing his three-month-old daughter 23 years ago "to frame his enemies".

The dispute was between Prakash Chand and Rajbir Singh over a piece of farm land in Nala village in Kandhla police station area of Shamli.

On September 22, 2000, Chand and Singh, along with their supporters, came to blows, wielding lathis and sharp objects. In the chaos, Singh's brother, Ombir, came out carrying his infant's body, saying she'd been shot dead. Chand and three others -- Upendra, Praveen, and Mukesh -- were booked for murder on Ombir's complaint.

Police eventually found that Singh had shot dead his own daughter to have the other men booked for murder.

Additional district government counsel (ADGC) Virendra Nagar said, "After the clash in 2000, both groups had filed cases against each other. After a probe of around three months, police found Ombir Singh had shot dead his own daughter to frame Prakash Chand and three others. Four persons were acquitted of murder and Singh was charged with murder. The matter was in court for around two decades. Finally, on Friday, Judge Reema Malhotra of additional sessions court number-14 sentenced Singh to life imprisonment for his daughter's murder."

"The others involved in the clash -- Rajbir and his supporters Pradeep, Yogendera and Geeta as well as Chand's aides Upendra, Praveen and Mukesh -- were handed one-year sentences each. Chand had died during the trial," he added.

District government counsel Rajeev Sharma said, "Ombir Singh has been convicted under section 302 (murder) of IPC. The other accused have been charged under sections 323 (Punishment for voluntarily causing hurt) 149 (If an offense is committed by any member of an unlawful assembly in prosecution of the common object of that assembly), 324 (Voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means), 147 (rioting), 148 (rioting, armed with a deadly weapon) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code.
