Tripura woman strangles son, seeks capital punishment

Agartala: A middle-aged woman pleaded guilty to the murder of her nine-year-old son and sought capital punishment for the crime before a city court in Agartala on Tuesday.She surrendered before the police and was arrested on Monday night from the Joynagar area of the city. She was produced before the court on Tuesday. The woman admitted to the crime adding that she had to strangle her son Rajdeep Goala after his delinquent behaviour became unbearable.The accused Suprabha Goala was abandoned by her husband during COVID-19. A couple of years back, she also married off her elder daughter. Since then, she had been living with her son Rajdeep in a colony in Joynagar. Suprabha used to work as an assistant at construction sites to earn a living.“Owing to Rajdeep’s delinquent behaviour, I was losing out on work. If left home unattended, he got roped into drugs and petty crime. I was unable to take him along to my workplace. Earlier, contractors have fired me from work when I took my son along. In a fortnight, I lost at least four jobs because of him. We could not even afford food,” Suprabha told the police.She added that Rajdeep developed a habit of stealing money from the house in the absence of his mother. Recently, he became arrogant and started abusing and assaulting her, she said, adding, “His insecure and violent behaviour made me feel unsafe around him.”
