The scorching heat may adversely impact the health of the students, he said in a Facebook post, announcing the closure of all state-run and state-aided schools.

He also appealed to the private schools in the state to do the same in view of the prevailing weather condition.

Tripura has 4,226 state-run and state-aided schools with 7.02 lakh students.

However, colleges and universities in the state will function as usual, officials said.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) report said Agartala has recorded the highest temperature among the northeastern states in the last two days. The maximum temperature has been predicted to touch 40 degrees Celsius on Tuesday with no chances of rain in the next three days.

The daytime temperature has been gradually rising with the mercury levels exceeding 6 degrees above normal in mid-April.

"The temperature may touch 40 degrees Celsius, but will not go beyond it. Sunday's temperature was higher than normal," an IMD Agartala official said.

The IMD officials as well as doctors have advised people, especially the elderly, children and those with comorbidities, to avoid venturing outdoors, particularly in the afternoon.
