I proactively took initiative to lead large-scale projects
My deep-rooted passion for technology has made me traverse across various technologies like Java, Python, AI, ML, automation, LLM/ Gen AI and cloud. I started my journey with technology close to two and half decades ago with my first job as a Java developer for a BFSI firm, where I led several projects for BNY Mellon. Then, moving to Cognizant as a product owner, I had the opportunity to build several mobile apps. After five years in that domain, I moved into intelligent process automation using AI. And there has been no turning back from the AI world since then.
It’s a pleasure trying to develop programs that can mimic the human brain. Currently, I head a cross-generational team of over 300 techies at Omega Healthcare where we leverage AI, ML and automation to build platforms that enhance patient care delivery outcomes.
I have observed that it becomes difficult for women to break past the mid-career glass ceiling owing to personal commitments and a desire to maintain a good work-life balance. The rapidly evolving technology landscape makes it challenging for women returning from a work sabbatical. But I believe in staying curious and committed to learning. Make it a habit to stay updated on industry trends and emerging technologies even if you are on a break.
Technology allows one to work remotely. More and more remote managed work will only help women coming into these roles because they don’t have to really take a break. I truly believe that being in the STEM field has helped me scale my career, and I am now able to beautifully balance both my personal and professional lives.
In technology, one needs to understand how to transition across roles and accordingly equip themselves to become leaders. In my early years, I proactively took the initiative to lead large-scale projects whenever I had the chance. We should not be afraid of taking challenging assignments and to lead projects. Show that you are willing to take initiative and go above and beyond your job description. You should also build a strong professional network by seeking out mentors who can provide guidance and advocate for your career advancement.
