Roche launches therapy for spinal muscular atrophy

MUMBAI:

Roche

has launched a spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) treatment drug in India priced at around Rs 6 lakh per bottle. The drug, Evrysdi (risdiplam) is approved for the treatment of

SMA

in adults and children 2 months of age and older, Roche said, adding that it was approved by the Indian health authorities after reviewing its efficacy and safety data from three global clinical studies designed to represent a broad spectrum of people living with SMA.

Evrysdi was first approved by the

US FDA

in August 2020.

SMA is a severe, progressive rare neuromuscular disease that can be fatal. It affects approximately one in 10,000 live births globally and one in 7744 live births in India, and is the leading genetic cause of infant mortality, the company said.

To further drive broader access to SMA patients in the country, Roche has announced a patient support programme for the drug.
