These wagons will replace six tonne of steel with three tonne of aluminium and because of the unique properties of aluminium, this will reduce the tare weight by three tonne thereby increasing the per wagon payload.

Trial orders have already been placed by the Research Design & Standards Organisation (RDSO) of the railways ministry.

"I believe that this (the budget proposal on aluminium wagons) will go a long way to popularise the use of aluminium as a viable alternative material for railway wagons, increasing wagon life from the earlier 10 years for steel wagons to 25 years for aluminium wagons. Although the cost for aluminium wagons would hereby be higher by about Rs 3 lakh, the payback period would be less than three years," Indal president S K Tamotia said.
