Govt raises duty-free baggage limit to Rs 75,000, new rules replace decade-old framework
The government has raised the duty-free allowance for passengers bringing imported goods into India to Rs 75,000 from the earlier Rs 50,000 under the newly notified Baggage Rules, 2026, PTI reported.
Under the new rules notified on Sunday, a resident or a tourist of Indian origin arriving in India other than by land will be allowed duty-free clearance of articles up to Rs 75,000, provided the items are carried on the person or form part of bona fide accompanied baggage.
The new Baggage Rules, 2026 will come into effect from midnight on February 2 and will replace the decade-old baggage rules framework.
For foreign tourists, the duty-free limit has been increased to Rs 25,000 from Rs 15,000 under the earlier Baggage Rules, 2016, according to PTI.
The rules also specify duty-free jewellery limits for returning residents or tourists of Indian origin who have lived abroad for more than one year. Female passengers will be allowed duty-free clearance of jewellery up to 40 grams, while the limit will be 20 grams for other passengers if carried in bona fide baggage.
Jewellery, under the rules, refers to articles of adornment ordinarily worn by a person and made of gold, silver, platinum or other precious metals, whether studded or not.
