Your municipality may not be supplying you potable water, but you can make your own pot of clean water at home. Water purifiers could become cheaper with the FM announcing a 50% reduction in excise duty ��� from 16% to 8%.
Though the budget provided Rs 1,200 crore under the Total Sanitation Programme, the FM had little to offer for integrated solutions that link water supply with sewage treatment.
Half of even Delhi���s population is denied both water and sanitation.
There is good news for rural India though. Under the Rajiv Gandhi Drinking Water Mission, meant to supply safe drinking water to villages, the allocation has been enhanced from Rs 6,500 crore in 2007-08 to Rs 7,300 crore.
The government has also introduced a novel project to provide clean drinking water at schools in water deficient areas.
With the cost of each such system estimated between Rs 15,000 and Rs 30,000, the finance minister has allocated Rs 200 crore to launch this component of the water mission.
There was a special gift for Chennai. The FM has committed Rs 300 crore to help the Tamil Nadu government set up a plant to turn sea water into potable water under a public-private project. This has come as a boon for the city reeling perenially under a water crisis.
