NEW DELHI: Direct-selling company Amway India on Monday said that its MD and CEO William Pinckney has been released on bail, nearly two months after he was taken into custody by the Andhra Pradesh police on criminal charges registered against the firm in the state. In an e-mailed joint statement, Amway chairman Steve Van Andel and president Doug DeVos said the release of the company’s India chief has come as a big relief.
“Our focus is squarely on efforts to ensure that nothing like this happens again. Our resolve to work with the newly elected Union government in New Delhi on clear direct selling legislation is stronger than ever,” they said.
Samir Behl, regional president, Europe, South Africa and India, Amway, said that Pinckney’s arrest and long detention was unnecessary and unreasonable. “We will vigorously defend ourselves at trial,” he said.
