World EV Day '24: Auto Inc speaks on the future of mobility
As the world celebrates World EV Day, India stands at a crossroads in its journey towards an electrified future for its vehicles. For India, the transition to electric mobility isn't just a trend. In fact, it's a necessity as the government is pushing to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, and build a self-reliant and innovative ecosystem. With government policies like FAME II, PLI and the recent EMPS, the EV ecosystem in India has expanded in the last four years as a whole. Here’s what industry players have to say on this celebration.
Rampraveen Swaminathan, Managing Director and CEO of Mahindra Logistics, emphasized the crucial role of the logistics sector in the EV revolution. "The logistics sector is at a pivotal juncture, with a significant opportunity to reduce carbon emissions, especially in last-mile operations," he said. He underscored India's ambitious target of achieving 100% electric last-mile logistics by 2030 as a transformative shift for both the industry and the environment.
Madhumita Agrawal, Founder & CEO of Oben Electric lauded LFP batteries as she said "This technology offers double the battery life, 50% higher heat resistance, and enhanced safety. LFP batteries are distinguished by their exceptional stability even under extreme conditions, minimizing risks like thermal runaway and ensuring superior safety for our riders. They also excel in thermal management and are built to handle overcharging and deep discharging, making them ideal for high-performance applications. From a sustainability standpoint, LFP batteries are environmentally friendly, as they are free from cobalt, a mineral often associated with ethical concerns in mining practices."
Vinod Aggarwal, MD & CEO, VECV said, “The government has set an ambitious program to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles including electric commercial vehicles (E-CVs). To make this a reality and promote EV adoption, various policies such as FAME, PM e-bus seva, and PLI schemes have been introduced. As India moves towards its Amrit Kaal, electric vehicles will play a crucial role in the journey towards a carbon-neutral nation.
Rajeev Chauhan, Head of Electric Passenger Vehicles (EPV) Business at BYD India, stated, “On this World EV Day, we proudly celebrate our contributions to sustainable mobility with our complete range of electric vehicles, powered by our advanced Blade Battery technology. As we look ahead, we remain dedicated to accelerating India's transition to sustainable transportation, ensuring that electric vehicles are accessible and beneficial for all.”
Manu Saxena, Senior Vice President of EV Business at TVS Motor Company, said "India is poised to lead the world in electric vehicle innovation, driven by our strides toward ‘atma nirbhar’ design, engineering, and supply chain excellence,". He further added “Support from government initiatives such as FAME and EMPS is vital in fostering the EV sector’s growth." Saxena believes that with expanding charging infrastructure and strategic global reach, India is well-positioned to become a leading hub for electric two-wheeler exports.
For Suhas Rajkumar, Founder and CEO of Simple Energy, World EV Day is a moment to reaffirm the dedication to reducing carbon footprints and delivering innovative, efficient mobility solutions. His remarks underscore the importance of continuous advancements in automobile innovation to pave the way for a cleaner, greener future.
Echoing the sentiments of collaboration and innovation, Samarth Kholkar, CEO & Co-founder of BLive, highlighted the transformative power of EVs in building a sustainable world. He stressed that EVs are not just the future - they're already here, symbolizing more than just technological advancement but also a collective dedication to a sustainable world. "As we observe World EV Day, it's clear the future of transportation is electric. We’re collectively driving change for the better," he added.
Anurag Choudhary, CMD & CEO, Himadri Speciality Chemical said "As electric mobility becomes an integral part of global sustainability goals, it's clear that innovation in battery technology will be a driving force in this transformation. With India's EV market surging to 1.5 million units in 2023—an impressive 50% rise from the previous year—there is no doubt we are at a pivotal moment. Two-wheelers, making up nearly 90% of EV sales, highlight the immediate impact on everyday mobility.
