Meet Beipanjiang Bridge, world's highest motorable bridge amid clouds
In the mountains of Southwest China, the Beipanjiang Bridge stands as a marvel of modern engineering. This bridge connects the provinces of Yunnan and Guizhou. Officially recognized as the world's highest motorable bridge in the Guiness Book of World Records, it soars 565 metres (1,854 feet) above the Beipan River valley. Let’s take a look at key highlights of this extraordinary bridge.
It was completed in 2016 after three and a half years of intense construction. The Beipanjiang Bridge is more than just a structural project. In fact, it came as a lifeline for one of China’s most rugged regions. The previously winding journey between Yunnan and Guizhou, which took hours to travel, can now be completed in just minutes.
Stretching over 1,341 metres in total length, with a main span of 720 metres, the Beipanjiang Bridge ranks as the second-longest steel truss girder cable-stayed bridge globally. It showcases an impressive blend of steel and concrete, with cable support technology ensuring stability across the deep valley it spans.
In terms of investments, it was constructed at a cost of USD 144 million (over 1 billion yuan). Despite challenges such as harsh weather and complex geological conditions, the project was completed with remarkable precision and efficiency. Today, the Beipanjiang Bridge not only connects two provinces but also stands tall as an icon of what human ingenuity and engineering can achieve in even the most difficult terrains.
