MotoGP confirmed in India for next three seasons: Signs contract with UP government
MotoGP made its India debut in 2023 and now it’s ready to return to India next year. The championship’s commercial rights holder Dorna has signed a fresh contract directly with the government of Uttar Pradesh. The agreement confirms the Indian Grand Prix will be on the calendar from 2025 to 2027 . The event will continue to be held at Buddh International Circuit.
Mr Manoj Kumar Singh, Chief Secretary-cum-Infrastructure & Industrial Development Commissioner, Government of UP, emphasised the monumental significance of this agreement: "Bringing MotoGP to Uttar Pradesh not only elevates our state on the global sports stage but also catalyses substantial economic growth across tourism, hospitality, and associated sectors. This event will magnetize visitors worldwide, spotlighting Uttar Pradesh's prowess in hosting world-class sporting extravaganzas."
The release stated that, with a population of over 1.4 billion people and more than 200 million motorcycles on its roads, India is a key global market for MotoGP, our manufacturers and many of the sport’s partners. Two-wheeled transportation counts for nearly 75% of the total number of vehicles used daily. Further, it stated, that India also has a healthy established audience for MotoGP, with further scope to grow in coming seasons. The inaugural Grand Prix at Buddh saw more than 100,000 fans come to see history made as the world’s most exciting sport raced in the country for the first time.
This year’s race was canceled “due to operational considerations.” Initially, as per few reports it indicated that the cancellation was because Fairstreet Sports had failed to pay the full hosting fee to Dorna on time. However, the organizer refuted this claim, explaining that Dorna was aware of the payment delay due to the ongoing General Elections. Despite this, both parties mutually agreed to cancel the 2024 race and reschedule it for March 2025 because of weather concerns.
